Abstract:
The paper approaches the importance of functional materials used for seed coating and their influence on germination processes within the context of current challenges in sustainable agriculture. Germination is presented as an essential stage in plant development, influenced by both internal seed factors and environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, oxygen, and light. In this context, seed coating technologies based on functional materials represent modern solutions for seed protection, water absorption control, stimulation of metabolic processes, and improvement of germination uniformity. The study analyzes the main categories of materials used in seed coating films, including biopolymers, biodegradable materials, and bioactive compounds, together with the physicochemical properties that determine their interaction with seeds. Biological and physicochemical mechanisms involved in germination are discussed, as well as modern methods for optimizing this process through innovative agricultural technologies. An important component of the paper is the transdisciplinary educational approach, which integrates concepts from biology, chemistry, physics, and materials science through experimental activities and educational investigations. An experimental plan designed for high school students is proposed, based on inquiry-based and discovery learning methods. The results highlight both the scientific relevance of functional materials for sustainable agriculture and their educational value in developing interdisciplinary skills, critical thinking, and an applied understanding of natural phenomena and modern technologies.
